The Combustion Temperatures of Butane and Gasoline Torches

The flame temperature of a butane torch exceeds 1300°C, whereas the flame temperature of a gasoline torch ranges from 800°C to 1000°C.


Butane is a colorless gas with a faintly unpleasant odor. It is insoluble in water but readily soluble in alcohol and chloroform. It is highly flammable and explosive. It is utilized as a solvent, a refrigerant, and a raw material for organic synthesis. Normal butane is present in oilfield gas, wet natural gas, and cracking gas, from which it is obtained through separation processes.


Gasoline (known as *Petrol* in British English) is a transparent, combustible liquid with a distillation range of 30°C to 220°C. Its primary constituents are C5–C12 aliphatic and cycloaliphatic hydrocarbons, along with a certain proportion of aromatic hydrocarbons. Gasoline possesses a high octane rating (indicating its resistance to engine knocking or detonation) and is classified into various grades-such as 90, 93, 95, and 97-based on the magnitude of this octane rating. Gasoline is produced by blending various refined components derived from petroleum refining-including straight-run gasoline, catalytically cracked gasoline, and catalytically reformed gasoline-with high-octane additives; it is primarily used as fuel for spark-ignition internal combustion engines in automobiles.
