Spray Gun Troubleshooting Guide:
Issues may occasionally arise during the operation of a spray gun. This guide provides a detailed analysis of common symptoms, identifies the underlying causes based on these observations, and outlines effective solutions to resolve them. The following lists some common malfunctions and provides corresponding solutions:
Spray Pattern Shifts Left or Right
Causes:
1. The fan control hole on one side of the air cap is clogged.
2. The air cap is damaged.
Solutions:
1. Clean the air cap.
2. Replace the air cap.
Spray Pattern is Too Heavy in the Center
Causes:
1. The viscosity of the paint being sprayed is too high.
2. The spraying pressure is too low.
3. The nozzle orifice has enlarged, or the fluid needle tip has worn down due to abrasion.
Solutions:
1. Reduce the paint viscosity.
2. Increase the spraying pressure.
3. Replace the nozzle set (nozzle and needle).
Spray Pattern Splits (Fishtailing)
Causes:
1. The viscosity of the paint is too low.
2. The spraying pressure is too high.
3. The inner diameter of the fan control holes is too large.
4. There is insufficient paint supply.
5. The atomizing air passage is clogged.
Solutions:
1. Increase the paint viscosity.
2. Reduce the spraying pressure.
3. Replace the nozzle set.
4. Add a sufficient amount of paint.
5. Clean the air passages within the spray gun.
Paint Spitting (Intermittent Flow)
Causes:
1. The nozzle is not tightened securely or is improperly installed.
2. The fluid needle packing/seal kit is loose.
3. The connection nut on the spray gun is loose (for bottom-feed guns).
4. There is insufficient paint in the cup/container.
5. The nozzle set is damaged.
Solutions:
1. Tighten the nozzle, or clean and properly install the nozzle set.
2. Tighten the fluid needle packing/seal kit.
3. Tighten the connection nut.
4. Refill the paint.
5. Replace the nozzle set.
Spray Pattern is Heavier at the Top or Bottom
Causes:
1. Debris is clogging the air outlets on the nozzle, fluid needle, or air cap.
2. The air cap or nozzle is damaged.
Solutions:
1. Clean the nozzle set.
2. Replace the nozzle set.
Symptom: No Paint Output or Very Low Paint Flow
Causes:
1. The air vent hole on the paint cup lid is clogged; alternatively, the air cap or the fluid suction tube is severely clogged.
2. There is no paint inside the cup.
3. The travel distance (stroke) of the fluid needle is too short. Solutions:
1. Clean the air vent hole on the lid, the air cap, and the fluid pickup tube.
2. Refill the paint.
3. Rotate the fluid control knob to increase the needle valve travel.
Paint Leaking from the Nozzle
Causes:
1. The needle packing nut is too tight.
2. Foreign matter is present inside the nozzle orifice.
3. The nozzle and needle are mismatched or damaged.
4. The needle return spring is broken or missing.
Solutions:
1. Loosen the needle packing nut.
2. Clean the nozzle.
3. Replace the nozzle set (nozzle and needle).
4. Replace or install the needle return spring.
Spray Pattern Cannot Be Adjusted
Causes:
1. The fan control ports on both sides of the air cap are clogged.
2. The fan control knob is damaged or incorrectly installed.
3. The air passage leading to the fan control ports is clogged.
Solutions:
1. Clean the air cap.
2. Replace or correctly install the fan control knob.
3. Clean the air passage.
Air Pressure Cannot Be Adjusted Properly
Causes:
1. The air regulator or air valve is damaged.
2. The air valve return spring is broken or missing.
Solutions:
1. Replace the air regulator or air valve.
2. Replace or install the air valve return spring.
Paint Leaking from the Needle Packing Seal
Causes:
1. The needle packing seal is worn out.
2. The needle packing washer is missing.
3. The needle packing spring is damaged or missing.
4. The needle packing nut is loose.
5. The contact surface between the needle and the packing seal is worn.
6. The needle is incompatible with the spray gun.
Solutions:
1. Replace the needle packing seal.
2. Install the needle packing washer.
3. Replace or install the needle packing spring.
4. Tighten the needle packing nut.
5. Replace the nozzle set (nozzle and needle).
6. Replace with a nozzle set that is compatible with the spray gun.
