How to Choose a Spray Gun: Selection Guide and Buying Considerations

1. Based on the Size and Weight of the Spray Gun Itself
With the aim of reducing operator fatigue, it is generally preferable to use a spray gun that is lightweight and compact. However, this also results in a reduced output of both paint and air, leading to longer spraying times and diminished operational efficiency; consequently, such guns are not suitable for large-scale coating applications. Conversely, using a large spray gun to coat small components or tubular objects results in significant paint wastage. For large, flat workpieces, a large spray gun is appropriate; however, for workpieces with highly irregular or complex contours, a smaller spray gun is the more suitable choice.


2. Paint Consumption and Supply Method
For applications involving low paint consumption and frequent color changes, a gravity-feed spray gun is recommended, though this type is not suitable for overhead spraying. When paint consumption is moderate and color changes occur frequently-particularly when spraying vertical surfaces-a suction-feed spray gun equipped with a cup (typically under 1 liter in capacity) offers greater convenience. For continuous operations involving high paint consumption and infrequent color changes, a pressure-feed spray gun-supplied by a pressurized paint tank-is the ideal choice. In cases of extremely high paint consumption, utilizing a pump and a paint circulation system to pressure-feed the paint allows for uninterrupted, continuous spraying. The use of quick-disconnect couplings facilitates easy cleaning and color changes; furthermore, since pressure-feed spray guns do not carry an attached paint cup or tank, they offer exceptional flexibility and maneuverability for spraying in any direction-up, down, left, or right.


3. Nozzle Orifice Diameter
In large-scale industrial production environments-where the surface area coated per unit of time and the volume of paint consumed are substantial-spray guns with larger nozzle orifices should be selected. Additionally, a larger nozzle orifice is appropriate when a thicker paint film is required, when applying primers, or when the aesthetic quality requirements for the final paint film are less stringent. Furthermore, when working with paints that have a high application viscosity, a larger nozzle orifice is necessary; conversely, when using low-viscosity paints or employing a pressure-feed supply system, a smaller nozzle orifice is preferred. Finally, when applying topcoats-which demand a high degree of paint atomization-a spray gun with a smaller nozzle orifice should be selected.
